Toby Bauert Sensei
2nd Dan M.G.R.Y.

Toby Bauert Sensei

  • Founder of Go Dai Ryu School of Martial Arts in Switzerland
  • Shodan Ju Jitsu
  • Shodan Judo
  • Qualified Kuatsu Instructor
  • Qualified Nunchaku Instructor

Toby was born in 1977 and started his Martial Arts career at the age of 11. Since then, he was involved in the Japanese Martial Arts without any break worth mentioning, particularly training in Judo (Shodan), Ju Jitsu (Shodan) and Karate. Most of his training is in Switzerland, but has also trained in Israel and the UK.

In April 1997 Toby followed the demand of some good friends and opened his own school - the Go Dai Ryu School of Martial Arts in Switzerland.

Toby became a qualified Kuatsu instructor in 1998 after several months of training and preparation under the direction of renowned Swiss Martial Artists as well as full-time physician and surgeons.

  • Since 2002 Toby supports the Swiss Martial Arts community by organizing international seminars in various styles under the direction of masters with international background, such as Lex Reinhart (Swiss) for Nunchaku, Olaf van Ellen (German) for Anti-terror fighting skills, Ralf Ulbig (German) for Krav Maga, Dagmar van der Velde (Netherlands) for Ki, Kevin Pell Hanshi (UK) for knife defence techniques and many more. By this, Go Dai Ryu school of Martial Arts became a platform for Swiss Martial Artists to meet traditional Martial Arts styles at a very high level.

Through Toby's growing interest on traditional weaponry, he got in contact with Kevin Pell Hanshi in 2004. Toby met Hanshi the first time at Honbu to be taught in Hojo Jutsu, an art that is almost unknown in Switzerland. When Pell Hanshi visited the Go Dai Ryu school of Martial Arts in Switzerland in April 2005 to direct a knife defence seminar it was a great honour for Toby to be accepted as a member in the Ishin Ryu organization.

Toby's intention is to teach Martial Art in familiar atmosphere and in a traditional way as an art rather than "only" a sport. Proper behaviour on and off the mat as well as a deeper understanding for the essential parts of Martial Arts is more important to Toby than winning competitions. Toby tries to promote its students individually to awake the true spirit of Budo in them.

On Saturday the 17th of March 2007, Toby was awarded his 2nd Dan by Ishin Ryu Ju-Jitsu's founder and chief instructor, Kevin Pell Hanshi at the organisation's 17th Anniversary presentation dinner held in Borehamwood in Hertfordshire.
